2nd Customer Review : Absolute disaster. Avoid this product at all cost
I bought 3 of these units at $500 each. 2 of them ceased working within a week. No help from the help line. OK, try to pack them back up again and lug them back to the store, or ship them. The third one does come on, but the tiny water reservoir fills immediately and is difficult and time-consuming to empty.

this is a very badly designed and thought-out product. I wish I'd never laid eyes on it. I've never been so disgusted with anything I've bought ever. Save yourself. Do not even consider this item. It does not work.

I instantly knew that in order for it to accomplish its claims, it would have to have two ventilation hoses to an outside window. 1 a fresh air intake hose. And 2 a heat exhaust hose. But it only came with the capacity to handle one hose only which is the heat exhaust hose.

The machine is not as big as I was worried so it would fit nicely on the counter. It is attractive, well packaged and seems solidly built.
I was really excited about getting it even though a bit worried from those who stated theirs quit working after such a short time. I also purchased a grinder.

Unfortunately when I set it up and stumbled through instructions that were not very friendly, the machine simply would not work. It wold sputter and make weird noises then flash lights meaning no water delivery.

The troubleshooting section of the instructions says to check filter, valve and water container. Checked all multiple times and it did seem to have trouble with flowing water out of the water container with the filter in, so I removed it after multiple attempts to re-activate it. Water would then come out the valve, but machine still operated with failures to deliver.

Was awesome for 1 months and then would only make lattes not cappuccinos as the frothing of the milk wouldn't work any more. That was already my second attempt with that machine, the first one being defective and leaking water. Surprising from a reputable coffee machine manufacturer. I haven't bothered with the customer service, I just took it back.

The EC 860 quit working after 2 weeks and then would only spit hot water. DeLonghi customer service was the worst I've ever encountered telling me only that I had to find a service place, I had to call to prearrange the places willingness to do the warrantee work on it and I had to pay the shipping... after 5 attempts to get any response at all. Perhaps my machine was a lemon, but there's no excuse for DeLonghi's lack of "customer care" (their words) & I won't waste my money on any of their products again. Thank GOODNESS for Amazon who will take it back and reimburse me!

1st Customer Review : Great Performance for the Price
Edit 2/24/2012: I wrote this review several years ago. The machine broke down after a year or so, and I put off replacing it. However, I've wanted to start making espresso again and so, remembering how much I liked this one, I picked up another one.

It's pretty much just how I remember it, and the instructions I wrote below still work. There are a couple of things I've noticed, though. First, the maker no longer comes with sample E.S.E pods. That was disappointing. Also, the bottom of the filter handle (where the coffee comes out of) is plastic - if you use a hand-held tamper, make sure you don't press too hard and damage the pour spouts.

Also, I've moved from the Midwest to the East Coast, and it's still nice to have good espresso and capuccino in your own house.

Otherwise, it's still a sold four-star machine.

2nd Customer Review : It works great after over a year
I have purchased this machine from Amazon on June 2006, that's 16 months ago and I have been using this coffee maker every day, usually 2 to 3 times a day. A few words about me, I grew up in Italy, lived there for over 20 years and I still go visit my country for at least a month every year so I should know about coffee, right? DeLonghi is considered a good brand in Italy, I'm not sure about customer service in the U.S. since I never had to contact them; my aunt in Italy has an identical machine with no complaints. I'm not sure about the complaints I read here. Some people say it takes too long to heat up the water... I usually turn it on 15 minutes before making the espresso and the water gets really hot, if you think that's too long then you've never used an espresso machine before, it's very average as a matter of fact. I've been a coffee snob for several years have several brewing machines scattered throughout my kitchen. Since I got this machine xmas morning, all the others brewing systems have become obsolete.

It produces plenty of steam in a jiff, and the removable water tank is very handy (especially for use with my water filter). While I scoffed at the thought of using the ESE pre-packed espresso pods, it came with a tin of them, so I tried them out since all local coffee houses were closed (and I had no beans!). The ESEs make a pass-able cup of espresso--not the darkest roast, but the convenience of a pod is handy. I have some Major Dikason's blend from Peets which I made regular espresso and Americanos out of. Delicious, thick, creamy.

This machine is a steal at this price. I've had to get the hang of packing my grounds in the handle, however. If I pack too tightly, the cream only comes out as a trickle. I suppose that's the case with most home machines, however...

1st Customer Review : Changed review a bit
This is my 4th expresso machine in the last 20 years and my 2nd DeLonghi one. I love it. You do have to read and follow all the directions before getting started, you have to pre-heat and you can't just turn it on and walk away like I have been able to do before. So, preparing the coffee does require your attention. But,it makes a great cup of espresso with nice crema. I can even froth for cappuccino with this one, which has been a challenge before. It is like a mini commercial machine. I like the one cup and two cup filters that can be stored in the water tank area. I like the "tamp" on the end of the measuring spoon. I like the look of it - red goes with my kitchen and it comes in many other colors. Only drawback is that it doesn't have the carafe like my previous DeLonghi and the old carafe doesn't fit under the filter. Amazon delivery was great. All in all, I am very satisfied with it.

2nd Customer Review : Disappointment So Far
I bought this espresso machine partly because it was a gift for my wife and she liked the way it looked and we had read mixed reviews but mostly good ones and it was at a decent price. When we got it, it worked great. It was a great little machine that made good coffee. We enjoyed it for all of about three weeks however before it stopped working. It literally would not turn on one morning and I called the DeLonghi customer service center and they said I would have to send it in to an approved service center. Since it was still under the one year warranty they stated all I would have to pay was the shipping to the service center. I was somewhat disappointed by this and told the lady on the line that I have had it less than a month and they would really expect me to pay for outgoing shipping? After my $500 dollar Breville broke after two years, I started shopping around for something good and not insanely expensive. I tried a cheaper version from my local store, and it did not deliver any foam/power. Then, saw this gorgeous little yellow number at Crate and Barrel and fell in love. Now, I got one for my mom as a gift. Every visitor that uses this machine in my house loves it and can't believe what great espresso and what powerful foam it yields. A PERFECT machine that does not cost $1000. The instructions are well designed and simple and the machine is likewise straightforward and excellent. It also looks cuter and takes up half the counter space than most other machines.
